ABOUT

This event will be an on-stage interview with Louise Penny and the launch of her latest book in the Chief Inspector Gamache series, The Black Wolf.

Louise Penny is the widely acclaimed author of the Chief Inspector Gamache novels set in her home province of Québec, Canada. Her books have sold more than 18 million copies worldwide, topped American, Canadian and international bestseller lists, and been translated into 35 languages.

Penny’s most recent book is The Grey Wolf. This #1 New York Times bestseller, the 19th mystery in the Inspector Gamache series, follows the investigations of the head of the homicide department of the Sûreté du Québec. In its starred review, Library Journal stated “Penny’s follow-up to A World of Curiosities plays on readers’ fears as she launches a new story arc that is completed in this installment but presents a cliffhanger. It’s a frightening novel of duality, of good versus evil, with an allegorical tale for today’s world, as only Penny can write.”

The Washington Post called The Grey Wolf one of the 10 best mystery novels of 2024. The Toronto Globe and Mail added, “Penny is a daring author. Rather than settling into a comfortable routine, she gives us her most ambitious novel yet… the last hundred pages move like lightning and the implication is there are more books to come. Clearly, Penny isn’t about to rest on her considerable laurels.” Her next book will be The Black Wolf coming October 28, 2025 from Minotaur.

Mattea Roach debuted as host of CBC’s Bookends with Mattea Roach in September 2024. Each week they engage bestselling and emerging Canadian and international writers about their work, the world, and our place in it.

Roach is a writer, podcaster and book lover based in Toronto. In the spring of 2022 they appeared on the game show Jeopardy!, winning 23 games and becoming the most successful Canadian contestant in the history of the program. They also won Canada’s great book debate, Canada Reads, in 2023 when they championed Kate Beaton’s graphic novel Ducks. Roach is originally from Halifax.

This event will be recorded for a future episode on CBC’s Bookends with Mattea Roach, and will be featured in CBC’s Live at Massey Hall series on CBC Gem and YouTube this fall.

When the book ends, the conversation begins on CBC’s BOOKENDS WITH MATTEA ROACH.
